The 2nd Annual Goodwill Homes Barbara J. Motley Memorial Walkathon
Saturday, September 26, 2009
Southland Mall, Memphis, TN
We want to share with you some very exciting news! We have made plans to celebrate the many contributions of one of the best kept secrets in the City of Memphis and the County of Shelby, Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. (GHCS, Inc.).
In 1957 Goodwill Homes was founded as the first residential facility for abused and neglected African American children in the State of Tennessee. Since its inception, this agency has provided a wide array of social services to those in need. Today, Goodwill Homes serves more than 10,000 people annually with a comprehensive social services approach. Services include foster care and independent living for at-risk youth, day care for frail elderly and mentally challenged adults, meals and recreation for seniors, subsidized housing for seniors, Head Start for pre-schoolers, and support services for families and caregivers. Goodwill Homes’ mission is “Creating Opportunities for Family Self Sufficiency”.
Barbara J. Motley served as the CEO of Goodwill Homes for twenty years. Under her leadership the agency flourished and continued to expand its programs to meet the community’s needs. She adhered to the agency’s philosophy, “Awareness of needs and answering them is the philosophy of program development at Goodwill Homes; helping families move towards self sufficiency with dignity and pride”. Ms. Motley perished in a tragic fire in March 2008. A ‘Memorial Walk-a-Thon’ has been planned September 26, 2009in an effort to raise funds to benefit Goodwill Homes and to honor Ms. Motley’s contributions to the agency.
We are excited about the activities that we have planned to help us preserve the history, the legacy, and the needed services that only Goodwill Homes Community Services can provide. Won’t you please join us in making this “Super Saturday” a successful venture for this much deserving agency.
